Chapter Fifteen

Have you ever been subscribed to a service without your permission? When I was away at university and Luke was still at school, he thought it would be hilarious to sign me up to the weekly pamphlets for various clubs near my student accommodation. I’d suddenly found myself on mailing lists for religious groups, cookery classes, and craft workshops – and at one point my housemates thought I was a Quaker, a baker, and a candlestick maker.

And to make the prank even more hilarious, Luke had signed me up with stupid names. At the time my name had been Evelyn Evans, but I certainly hadn’t been Her Right Royal Highness Evelyn Evans, Evelyn Evans Princess of Power, or the Honourable Lord Evelyn Evans Esquire.

What a scamp my brother was...

But even after that experience, nothing could’ve prepared me for my time serving on the Beings of Magic Committee. I’d been voted in as Sergeant at Arms the day I’d arrived in the village, and I couldn’t leave because that required a unanimous vote, and I was the only one in favour of the motion.

Over the last eighteen months, I’d spent many a long hour nodding off during committee meetings, but today I was bracing myself for more than just the usual nonsense about biscuits and bus shelters. It was Halloween, which meant we needed to perform an important incantation to ward off evil beings – who always tried to sneak into the human world when the glut of dark magic made the veil thinner.

Of course, the main evil overlord, my father, was already in the village. Thankfully the committee’s previous incantations had reduced his powers. But he could always kill us in the usual human ways...

I rushed into Jager and Djuna’s newspaper office to find the others already sitting at the long table. “Sorry I’m l—”

Committee President Anwyn was in mid-flow. “...but some stupid fool has told my son about magic, making him susceptible to the Beings of Evil – the leader of whom is at large after infiltrating my dinner last night! Ah, Ms Eldritch, so nice of you to join us.”

I slunk into my seat and waved hello to everyone. Joanie was here as Witch-Without-Portfolio, then there was Gabe – an angel, Torvig – an elf... and a couple of wolves sitting up on their seats. Of course, Jager and Djuna – it was the full moon!

I quickly cast the spell that translated their growls and yaps into words in my head.

But who was this? There was an older lady dressed in Edwardian clothing sitting next to Joanie whom I didn’t know. Thankfully not Lady Cartwright here to demand her forty-two-inch telly! No, this woman was flesh and blood, and she looked stern with her stiff collar and prim expression. It was hard to see her face, due to the large ostrich feather stuck in her even larger hat.

She was having a side-chat with Joanie, so I turned to Djuna and stroked her soft fur. “What a shame you’ll miss the tea dance tonight.
